installDeploy Nextcloud All-in-One with Docker, or perform a manual web-server, PHP and database installation
dataFiles live in the configured local data directory or object storage; metadata, shares, versions and application state live in a supported SQL database

People still pay for Google One because storage subscriptions sell confidence that files will still exist after a lost device, bad sync, or provider incident. The recurring cost buys chunking, encryption, conflict detection, versions, garbage collection, bandwidth, restore drills, monitoring, billing, and disaster recovery, not just the visible interface. The recorded subscription totals $119.88 a year before any costs of an alternative.
Questions about these alternatives
Is there a free alternative to Google One?
Yes: Nextcloud Files, Seafile Community Edition, OpenCloud. These are recorded free or open-source options. Compare their feature limits, licenses, hosting costs and current availability before choosing.
Should I just build my own Google One?
Our verdict is NOT REALLY. A consolation build is possible, but the paid product's decisive value sits outside a solo rebuild. For Google One, back up selected personal files and photos to a user-owned storage target. The hard boundary is google account integration, photos, device backup, family sharing, and global infrastructure, plus reliability, durability, and cross-device sync. Review the scope, implementation prompt and trade-offs in the Google One build guide.
