Runway
Generative video and creative AI tools for images, video, and editing
A UI around video models is buildable; the video-generation model quality, compute, safety, editing stack, and continuous research are not a solo afternoon project.
Build verification: not recorded. How we judge buildability
What you give up
- frontier video models
- compute
- asset history
- model updates
- commercial rights workflows
- editing polish
Why people still pay
They pay because generative video quality and inference infrastructure are the product.
Your build guide
The stack, security requirements, and agent rules for a focused replacement.
Before you start
- GPU/hosted video API
- storage
- video rendering
- safety filters
- prompt/workflow UI
Use these project rules and optional skill references alongside the prompt. Review each skill before adding it to your agent; the AGENTS.md export includes the same guidance.
Project rule, data: Model prompts, source clips, model settings, jobs, and exported videos; keep stable source IDs and timestamps.
Project rule, behavior: Generate via the Replicate API (token in .env) against current open video models (Wan/LTX/Hunyuan class). Pick one provider and stick to it; fal.ai only if it has a model Replicate lacks.
Project rule, recovery: Keep the original media file untouched when decoding or rendering fails; show the failing job and allow retry.
Implementation plan
Phase 1, architecture and data
A local web page on localhost:3300: Node + Express, a prompt box, a model picker, and a gallery of past generations. Model prompts, source clips, model settings, jobs, and exported videos; keep stable source IDs and timestamps.
Phase 2, implement
Generate via the Replicate API (token in .env) against current open video models (Wan/LTX/Hunyuan class). Pick one provider and stick to it; fal.ai only if it has a model Replicate lacks.
Phase 3, implement
Image-to-video: upload a still and pass it as the conditioning frame.
Phase 4, review and output
Show a month-to-date spend total computed from per-job cost so usage stays honest. Poll the job, download the mp4 to ~/generations/YYYY-MM-DD/, and record prompt, model, params, cost, and file path in SQLite (better-sqlite3).
Phase 5, recovery and acceptance
Keep the original media file untouched when decoding or rendering fails; show the failing job and allow retry. Verify this invariant with a saved fixture: A failed or cancelled job cannot be presented as finished; exported video duration and frame size must match the saved job settings. State the practical limit: frontier video models.
Build me a thin video-generation workbench over hosted models, in place of Runway. Requirements: - A local web page on localhost:3300: Node + Express, a prompt box, a model picker, and a gallery of past generations. - Generate via the Replicate API (token in .env) against current open video models (Wan/LTX/Hunyuan class). Pick one provider and stick to it; fal.ai only if it has a model Replicate lacks. - Poll the job, download the mp4 to ~/generations/YYYY-MM-DD/, and record prompt, model, params, cost, and file path in SQLite (better-sqlite3). - Image-to-video: upload a still and pass it as the conditioning frame. - Show a month-to-date spend total computed from per-job cost so usage stays honest. - No accounts, no telemetry; prompts and outputs stay local except the API calls themselves. - Out of scope: editing timelines, inpainting, and anything realtime. Do not build model hosting or a job queue beyond simple polling. - README: where to get the Replicate token, rough dollars per second of video on the default model, and a note that this rents models rather than replacing Runway, whose frontier video models and compute cannot be rebuilt solo.

Questions about Runway
Can you build your own Runway with AI?
A full replacement is not the recommended project. A UI around video models is buildable; the video-generation model quality, compute, safety, editing stack, and continuous research are not a solo afternoon project.
What does the Runway build prompt cover?
The prompt starts with this scope: Wrap open-source/video APIs to generate or edit clips, manage credits, and export assets. Full-product capabilities excluded from the comparison include: frontier video models; compute; asset history. Follow the implementation plan and its prerequisites before expanding the build.
How do I use the prompt, AGENTS.md and agent skills?
Start with the Runway prerequisites and stack, then copy the prompt into your coding agent. Save the project rules as AGENTS.md in the project root. Linked skills are optional packages or source instructions for specific tasks; review their current contents and install only those matching the chosen stack. A skill does not supply API credentials or verify the finished app.
How long will this Runway project take?
The catalogue estimate is not realistically solo for the limited scope. Setup, integration approvals, debugging, deployment and ongoing maintenance can add time. This is an estimate, not a delivery guarantee.
What would I give up by replacing Runway?
frontier video models; compute; asset history; model updates; commercial rights workflows; editing polish. They pay because generative video quality and inference infrastructure are the product.
What price is this guide comparing against?
The recorded Standard plan is $15/mo (monthly), checked 2026-07-30. Check the linked pricing source before buying. Building your own also has hosting, API and maintenance costs; the recorded amount is not a guaranteed saving.
What can I use instead of building Runway?
ComfyUI: Images, video, masking, upscaling and effects in one graph; it replaces tools, not Runway's polish. SwarmUI: A friendlier shell around local image and video workflows; editing remains thinner than Runway's. LTX Desktop: The closest free thing to a generative video suite: local models, retakes and an actual editing timeline. Compare all listed options at https://howtovibecodeit.dev/runway/alternatives. Check each option's license, hosting needs and feature limits.
